Emphasised text is a way of saying, „Hey, look at me, I‟m important!‟. As humans, when we read text that is bold, italic or underlined we know it is important. The same is true for search engines. Search engine „spiders‟ (programs responsible for indexing websites) detect these forms of emphasised text and make note of them. For this reason, it is important that targeted keywords appear in these formats on the page. It is not necessary that every instance of a keyword or keyphrase be emphasised. I find the best way to use it is to type in my subject in quotes. That way Google only alerts me when any news comes up just for that particular phrase. Otherwise, I would get alerts for any news that comes up with any of the words in my phrase.

Anyway, the reason I'm even mentioning Google Alerts is because I have been receiving TONS of new information lately, it seems every hour I get more Alerts and this tells me two things.

2) Many more websites are continuously adding information!

What I'm reading is that CONTENT truly is KING. All content, new content, continuously fresh content, data, data, data!!!!

Basically, the more information (relevant information of course) you have on your website, the higher your rankings will be, the more audience you'll be attracting, the more sales you'll receive, the more exposure you'll get and the more links you'll have.

Think about it, part of getting UP on the search engines is getting other websites to link TO you. That's easy enough to do with search engines and directories. But it's a bit harder to get other regular websites to link to you. So, many people participate in a link exchange type of program. That's good, but what's even better is having other websites link to you because you have something GOOD to say! These are ONE WAY links, in other words you don't have to reciprocate the link! At this time of writing, Yahoo finally receives some competition to Yahoo
groups.
It all began when Google announced their plans to index and archive all of
Usenet (the original newsgroup system of the Internet), and make it available
for web-based browsing.
Google didn't stop there, though. The past year brought even more changes
as Google set out to remake itself into a search portal, adding on the free
Gmail service and its own set of user-created newsgroups.
Google Groups (http://groups-beta.google.com) share some features in
common with Yahoo Groups, but the service also differs in a few key ways:
· Users can create invite-only, private groups which are not listed in the
Groups directory and will not be indexed into regular search results.
· Google Groups' interface is sparse compared to Yahoo. Currently there is
no way to.
· A group search pulls in both Google-user created groups as well as Usenet
newsgroups (eg, alt.ebay).
Rest assured, though, you can still build your own virtual newsletter via
Google Groups, and use the same list-building and niche research tactics as
outlined in the Yahoo Groups section of this report.
In fact, one of the benefits Google plays up on its main groups page is the
ability to center discussions around niche topics.
How is this different from Yahoo or any other service employing topic
directories for classification? It's not.
I suspect Google is just overstating the case here to encourage 'Joe Surfer' to
put some thought into where he lists his new Google Group.
The real benefits of Google Groups, in my opinion, are as follows· The service is new. You have a window of opportunity to jump in now and
create a very visible, high-traffic group before things get too cluttered.
· High traffic. The potential is there. You need to patient. You need to recruit
members to your group. Average web surfers haven't fully adopted Google
Groups as their number one choice yet.
· Potential indexing opportunities – both in regular Google listings as well as
the main Google Directory.
· Very useful media integration tools likely coming some point in the future. I
can't see any reason why Google wouldn't implement some type of crosslinking
between its groups and other tools like Picasa – or surprise us all
with a 'killer app'.
Final Verdict:
Google Groups is worth pursuing now as both a traffic tool and niche research
tool. Lots of potential. Not quite ready to clobber Yahoo Groups though. I'd
recommend using both, even if it means you create duplicate groups.
Definitely split-test between the two for performance data. As far as I know, no
one has done this yet (there's a nice little niche report idea there for you, by
the way).

If you aren't ranked well in Google for organic (free) listings as yet, this is most likely the engine you want to focus on. Google supplies secondary data to a number of other search engines/indices and sites including the mega-social networking site - MySpace.

Yahoo Search Marketing sponsored search Previously known as Overture, it's one of the heavyweights of the pay per click industry. This model requires that you bid on keywords for ranking and at times the competition can become quite insane - some advertisers go overboard. As an example, I recently reported that on the word "computer", the no.1 advertiser had bid US$10 for the privilege. The number 2 position was held by an advertiser prepared to pay US$.77 per click. It's a huge difference.

Coupled with the fact that not everyone who clicks on the link will purchase, it can become an extraordinarily expensive marketing exercise. The COA (Cost of Acquisition) tied in with each sale may not viable for the some small online businesses, unless you are selling high profit items. The minimum bid starts at 10 cents per click.

This doesn't mean to say PPC is not a viable option - many merchants use it very successfully. If you're new to PPC, you'll want some practice and Yahoo offers new account holders some freebies - sign up and get a $25 credit.
Yahoo paid listing (directory):

US$299.00 non-refundable, recurring annual fee for commercial site in their directory. Adult sites will be charged US$600. Community, non-profit sites can still get a free listing.

MSN free listing:Up until early November 2004, MSN results were powered by Inktomi - which is owned by Yahoo. As you can imagine, this would have made Microsoft rather uncomfortable, so they are now using their own home-grown search technology.

MSN paid listings Another option for listing on MSN Search is as a "sponsored listing" (Pay Per Click) via MSN AdCenter. It will cost you $5 to sign up and bidding starts at 5c per click.AltaVista:Up until early April 2004, Alta Vista, which was acquired by Yahoo!, operated as a separate entity in terms of search results.

The era has ended, and now to be listed in Alta Vista, you only need to submit to Yahoo!; either through their free URL submission service or via Yahoo Search Marketing. Yahoo Search Marketing are currently offering a $25 credit.
DMOZ:Still a strong community of independent editors, free listings, but you are only listed once in most cases and having your listing updated can take a long time. Considering that DMOZ supplies data to hundreds of search engines/indices and sites, including Google, it's absolutely essential to be listed here.

I cannot stress this enough - be sure to read the submission guidelines. There are many other paid and free listing search engines around, but you're really best off concentrating on the big 3 - Google, Yahoo and MSN search respectively and DMOZ for a directory listing.
